The fitness wearable category spent a decade turning human health into streaks, rings, and reasons to feel guilty before breakfast. Family caregiving has a harder problem: the people who need context are often not the people wearing the sensor.

Luffu, founded by former Fitbit leaders James Park and Eric Friedman, has opened preorders for Link, a screenless LTE health and safety band. The device combines activity and sleep sensing, location awareness, voice logging, and a help request that works without a nearby phone. The current preorder price is about 250 dollars, and shipment is expected in early 2027. It is not in customers' hands yet.

The interface is intentionally narrow. A wearer can press a button to record a medication, symptom, meal, mood, or request for help. Trusted contacts can receive the message with location, battery status, and recent health context. That is less glamorous than a full smartwatch and more aligned with the real job: reduce the coordination load without forcing an older parent to become a systems administrator.

The danger is obvious. Family intelligence can become family surveillance if permissions are vague, alerts are noisy, or access persists after relationships change. The product will handle location, health patterns, voice, and emergency context. Its success depends as much on consent, role design, deletion, and escalation rules as it does on sensors or machine learning.

Luffu is aiming at a better category than personal optimization. Care is distributed work performed by exhausted people with incomplete information. A useful system should reduce that burden while preserving the wearer's agency. The launch establishes the thesis. Shipping dependable hardware and earning trust will decide whether it becomes infrastructure or another well-meaning gadget in a drawer.
