The Pentagon is not picking one AI winner. It is building a secure loading dock where several frontier models can compete for government work without every employee opening a consumer account and hoping for the best.
The department launched ChatGPT Mil on August 31 inside GenAI.mil. The official release says the service is accredited at Impact Level 5 for Controlled Unclassified Information and supports chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs for document-heavy work such as planning, policy, logistics, and administration. It is built to support more than three million military and civilian personnel.
ChatGPT joins Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok in the portal. TechCrunch reports that more than 1.7 million unique users have already accessed GenAI.mil. OpenAI says data processed in the government environment is isolated and is not used to train or improve its public or commercial models. Those are meaningful boundaries, but IL5 is not a magic accuracy certificate and it does not turn model output into classified intelligence.
The multi-model design is the strategic move. A common access layer can route work to different capabilities, reduce dependence on one vendor, and let the department compare performance under shared controls. It can also hide dangerous differences if leaders treat every model as interchangeable. Logging, retention, tool permissions, hallucination rates, and escalation behavior still vary.
Enterprise AI becomes real when the organization stops distributing subscriptions and starts governing a system. GenAI.mil is that transition at enormous scale. The proof will not be how many people open the portal. It will be whether the department can measure where each model helps, where it fails, and which decisions should never be delegated to it.
